The principal tasks of Nurses and Midwives Association of Slovenia are to:
1. protect and represent the professional interests of its membership;
2. facilitate the development and activities of nursing and midwifery care in the Republic of Slovenia;
3. participate in formulating and guiding health policies in the Republic of Slovenia;
4. cooperate with the government, educational institutions, the Health Chamber, the Extended Nursing Chamber at the Ministry of Health, the Health Insurance Institute of Slovenia, and other institutions in creating conditions for efficient and successful work of nurses, midwives and nurse assistants;
5. receive, discuss, process and respond to initiatives and expressed interests of its membership;
6. participate in preparing laws and regulations in the fields of nursing, midwifery, health care and related areas;
7. organize, coordinate and guide the education and training of nurses, midwives and nurse assistants;
8. cooperate with the ministries responsible for health and education, and with schools, colleges, universities and other organizations in planning, designing, monitoring and updating training programmes for nursing and midwifery care;
9. design traineeship programs and supervise their implementation;
10. encourage and guide nurses, midwives and nurse assistants in continuing professional education;
11. organize and carry out professional counselling in the field of nursing and midwifery care;
12. provide opinions on granting licences for private and independent practice of nursing and midwifery care;
13. provide opinions on granting concessions in the field of nursing and midwifery care;
14. formulate and adopt amendments to the Code of Ethics for Nurses and Nurse Assistants of Slovenia and the International Code of Ethics for Midwives;
15. detect and sanction all forms of misconduct in nursing and midwifery practice, including in particular violations of the Code of Ethics for Nurses and Nurse Assistants of Slovenia, the International Code of Ethics for Midwives, and the Nurses and Midwives Association of Slovenia Statute;
16. monitor the work of its member societies and promote cooperation among them;
17. found and dissolve professional sections, and coordinate and monitor their activities;
18. maintain the register of its members and issue membership cards;
19. collect information which is important for the assessment of work and strategic planning of nursing and midwifery care;
20. monitor employment policies and participate in planning future requirements fo nursing and midwifery personnel in the Republic of Slovenia;
21. cooperate with trade unions and other organizations in assuring that nurses, midwives and nurse assistants work in suitable conditions and that their work is appropriately valued;
22. support volunteer work;
23. provide legal support and protection of professional interests for nurses, midwives and nurse assistants;
24. cooperate with international organizations;
25. encourage development and research in nursing and midwifery care;
26. publish the professional journal Obzornik zdravstvene nege (Nursing Review), the bulletin Utrip, and other publications;
27. participate in preserving and developing the cultural and historical heritage of nursing and midwifery care;
28. confer awards.
